Muscat and the Capital Area

As indicated, most things can be obtained in the Capital Area and more goods in greater variety and quality are coming onto the market all the time.

Food A very wide range of food comparable with that found in European supermarkets is readily available, with many familiar brands being stocked. The Supermarkets all have bakeries, delicatessens and fresh meat counters.

  • Toiletries Most toiletries, including disposable nappies and leading brands of sanitary towels/tampons, are available from supermarkets or numerous well stocked pharmacies. Beauty preparations and cosmetics, including Bodyshop and more expensive brands like Revlon, Dior, Estee Lauder, are available.
  • Audio/Visual Equipment A wide range of well known equipment (especially Japanese) is available at prices which are generally competitive with Europe. A fairly good range of CDs and audio tapes are available in Muscat. Video tapes are available, but often in versions that have been subject to some censorship. Video CDR and DVD equipment and CDs are also available.
  • Computers and Software Many brands of computer are available. Prices vary, but lap-tops are expensive.
  • Books English paperback books are readily available (new and second-hand) in Muscat, but there is a limited choice of hardback books. There is also a reasonable selection of English children's books. Specialised books should be imported although there is a good supply of dictionaries. Books are generally expensive compared to Europe. There is little or no availability of adult's or children's books in other foreign languages, with the exception of some guide books (although some are available second-hand).
  • Newspapers/magazines There is a good selection of English magazines but it is generally cheaper to order from Europe on a subscription basis. Most well-known British dailies can be bought. However, newspapers of other languages are limited or unavailable (although it may be possible to take out a subscription). However, prices of imported magazines and papers are very high.
