Islam has five main principles:
1. The profession of Faith
This is the belief that there is only one God and Mohammed is his Prophet
2. Prayer
Muslims pray five times a day - before dawn, at mid-day, in the latter part of the afternoon, at sunset and in the evening. The worshippers face towards Mecca.
3. Alms Giving
The giving of alms to the needy.
4. Fasting : Ramadhan
One of the months of the Islamic lunar year is the holy month of Ramadhan, during which all Muslims fast from daybreak until sunset on each day. They refrain from eating, drinking and smoking and collectively observe the fixed hours of prayers. The strict observance of this fast results in considerable mental and physical strain. This is a period during which Islam most closely impinges on the operations of the Company and the working day is normally reduced for Muslim employees. In addition all non-Muslim employees are requested to avoid eating, drinking or smoking in the presence of Muslims during the period of the fast. Eating, drinking and smoking in public is forbidden.
5. The Haj
Every Muslim who can afford it, and who is fit enough, must make the pilgrimage to Mecca.
