Agricultural and livestock sector
The results of Agricultural Census 2004-2005 have contributed to identifying the agricultural activities and livestock in the Sultanate in general and the Dhofar governorate in particular.
The results of the census show that the number of agricultural title deeds in Dhofar governorate amounted to 18323 or 9% of the total number of deeds in the Sultanate which stand at 194372. The size of such deeds in Dhofar governorate stands at 45170 fedans or 14% of 324,389 planted Fedans in the Sultanate. The number of coconut trees in Dhofar governorate is estimated at 89,827 trees of 138,803 in the Sultanate ( 65%).
The number of date palm trees in Dhofar (especially in AL Najd , Doka and Al Shasr ) stands at 21388 trees producing 132 tonnes out of total 6,528,605 trees in the Sultanate (0.1% ). Dhofar governorate is famous for growing tropical crops mainly bananas and coconuts.
Banana: cultivated area amounts to 750 acres at 12 tons per acre total production of 9000 tons over the year
Coconuts: The second trade after the harvest of bananas and an estimated 876 hectares of cultivated area and production of around 6847 tons per year, only 1700 tons per year and the rest is consumed locally and a local product was 94.2% and the proportion of imported product was 5.8%.
Fafai: estimated area planted 100 acres by 23 tons per hectare and total production of 1238 tons
Other crops: successful coffee-growing, and other kinds at Qairon Hiriti experimental farm as well as other crops such as grapes and cardamom
Frankincense tree: a long-lived tree about 3 meters high and gives the output after 8 years . The estimated production of one tree is 10 kg per, . The tree grows in the eastern parts of the Dhofar governorate in the Samhan & Hasik . The production is characterized by the purity of its white color and being free from impurities. Najdi types comes second in terms of quality and Alchasri third place. The lowest quality is Al Shaabi which grows at the costal valleys and SHeab. The more the tree is away from the rain areas, the more its production will be high. The total value of the annual production stands at RO.30 million.
